. simon, there was suggestion the deal collapsed because of german objections. what was it the germans were not happy about? >> it seems that germany, like france, was unwilling to give up state influence over this important defense company, which is what bae systems wanted them to do in order to secure more access to that all-important american defense market. i think germany was also worried it might be left out of important developments in military technology. the german authorities think that germany's interests are best served if this franco- german company retains control of the whole chain from research through to production. there's also a report that germans had suggested moving the headquarters of the merged company to munich, which would have annoyed the other two companies. >> was that all that was blocking the deal from going ahead? >> in the and, you have to see this was a hugely difficult deal that involves getting agreement from two companies, three governments, and that is incredibly difficult to do. the euro crisis has not helped, and in the end, you have to say inves

ahmadinejad and the country's supreme leader ayatollah khomeni. joining me simon henderson, director of the gulf and energy policy at the washington institute for near east policy. thanks so much for joining us. let me get your reaction. what do you think of these new sanctions? >> will they help? will they do the business? probably not. we need more than that and it's, as you probably realize, or no already, there's an argument which is that sanctions aren't going to do the business anyway. they won't change the mind of tehran on its nuclear program. melissa: yeah, let's start with the new sanctions first, kind of what they are. they're supposed to close the existing loopholes in the sanctions. another thing they do is add penalties for companies who aid iran's business sector. sounds like things we should have been doing anyway. >> yeah, but you can always think of other little niches that you've got to cut off and this is what they're doing. if, i was cynical of course i'm not very cynical, i would say that the obama administration is taking opportunity to do something else which

their tax breaks? joining me tonight is sister simone campbell, leader of the nuns on the bus. sister, good to have you with us tonight. let's do the math, if we can, for just a moment. do you believe most churches have an extra $50,000 lying around to pick up the tab that ryan describes himself as a man of faith? how do we get through all of this? do the churches have the kind of money to follow the plan that he's putting forth? >> absolutely not. i mean, it's really shocking to think that he believes that churches can do this. what he doesn't know is how hard people are working right now, how much they depend on the food subsidies, just even to get food on family tables and how churches are stretched already in food pantries, feeding programs, all kinds of places already giving so much. this $50,000 for each house of worship would be an additional amount to what they have already raised. it's impossible. >> do people in the inner city need to be taught good discipline and good character. that's what paul ryan believes. >> i know. it's pretty shocking because he clearly has not been where
